Tony,

I saw the RMBS CFO on CNBC this morning. It was quite comical. Mark Haines asked him if DDR memory would be faster than Rambus. The CFO responded, "We don't think so, because Rambus operates at 800 Mhz and DDR operates at 200 Mhz." Mark went on to mention that he has seen reports that Rambus slows down if more than 512 MB is used in a system. The CFO responded, "We don't think so, because Rambus is used in the Sony Play Station, and we are seeing good performance there." Mark went on to state that Intel had originally said that the P4 would be Rambus only, but that they have changed their minds, and if that concerned RMBS. The CFO responded, "We don't think so, because there will only be a Rambus chipset for the P4 until Q3 of next year, and by that time, the price of Rambus will be competitive."

So, two of the answers (1st and 3rd) were out-right lies, and the other was completely irrelevant diversion. I don't see how any supporters of this company can look at themselves in the mirror.

Pravin.

Tony, but where did Intel put their engineering A team (or B or C)?

- Chipsets? (recalls)
- Itanium? (delayed by several YEARS now; IA-64 performance? Ah, I know the answer: "Let's wait for the REAL Itanium". But how long?)
- Production? Unable to deliver, unable to crank up, recalls )
- Internet? (profits?)

Well I hope it's P4 where these teams are working.

But anyway, I still miss a good answer for what's happening there at INTC. Tad LaFountain once wrote: "There will be case studies". I think he was right. And this was the analyst who downgraded AMD from "strong buy" to "buy" when the stock price hit $30 ($60 pre split).

Boris

BTW, you are the "Another quarter to dance for AMD and than slam the door" Tony Viola? (Q1/00), aren't you?

Tony, on the subject of Intel and Rambus, I had to go dig up some of the early posts I made on the other thread, and the responses I got from Jeff Fox. As you might gather from reading these, I used to be somewhat more circumspect on this issue before I started interacting with the bus people. The gist of it is that apparently Intel higher ups thought that packaging and pin counts were a bigger deal than they turned out to be in practice. Or something.

That discussion was before some of the details of the Rambus/Intel contract came out. To me, the big puzzle with Intel and Rambus is not that Intel committed to RDRAM, but that they committed to it exclusively, to the point of letting Rambus dictate what Intel could and could not do in the chipset business. I think the lawyers screwed up more than the engineers, though you'd think that an engineer-driven company like Intel, somebody would have picked up on that.

Cheers, Dan.
