I'm sure that the whisper number will inexplicably leap to $0.91 on October 11th, 3:59pm.

Any body can register to whisper.com and put in their numbers. I believe, last quarter some shorters or Intel supporters must have entered very high estimates just a week before the earning date. They did it just to make it look bad after earnings. See JC's reply to your post. It's a one liner but encapsulates what can happen with the whisper number.
