McCain Raps Bush As Well As Gore

By RON FOURNIER
AP Political Writer

WASHINGTON (AP) -- John McCain said Thursday ''it was a mistake'' for George W. Bush to reject his challenge to ban soft money from the presidential race against Democrat Al Gore.

Bush advisers said they were frustrated with McCain for forcing the issue of campaign finance reform into the race by seeking a voluntary ban on the unlimited, unregulated donations. Gore accepted McCain's proposal, and Republican strategists said the whole episode could complicate Bush's efforts -- just as he has been rising in polls.

Climbing back into the political ring after a cancer scare, the Arizona senator has seized the spotlight with attacks against bad movies, flawed tires, wasteful spending and, most notably, the fund-raising practices of both presidential nominees.

Accepting a soft money ban ''would have been a major step toward ridding the political system of its most pernicious evil -- and that's unregulated donations,'' the senator said Thursday in a telephone interview that also included a harsh assessment of Gore's ''reprehensible'' record on campaign fund-raising.

"...you can't call him a rapist....If you were to call Clinton "a rapist" in a publication or broadcast, he could sue you for defamation of character."

SI counts as a publication.

Bill Clinton is a rapist....now bring on your lawyers; and you sir are a partisan hack. I am happy to see, however, that you have cleaned up your slutty attitude and comments about "The opposition."

<<But what do we have to show for this witch-hunt?>>

13 convictions of their croneys and two dead bodies of those who opposed them.

The president committed moral lapses; he's paid the price in terms of public and familial embarrassment; now it's time to move on and respect the office of President of the United States of America.

I've got plenty of respect for the office of the President, that's why I hate to see a cretin like Clinton infesting the WH. He's comitted more than moral lapses. He was impeached. His conduct was criminal (in the Lewinski affair) and he WILL be indicted just as soon as his sorry lying ass leaves the WH. Time to separate your excessive apologia from the facts. JLA

<Until Clinton is convicted in a court of law of the crime of rape, you can't call him a rapist.>

Wrong. I can call him anything I damn well please.

<You can't even call him an "alleged rapist," because he has no rape charges pending against him in any state court.>

Wrong again. A rape victim has alleged that he raped her, therefore he is an alleged rapist. If he did indeed commit the alleged rape, he is a rapist.

<If you were to call Clinton "a rapist" in a publication or broadcast, he could sue you for defamation of character.>

The truth would be my defense. He wouldn't sue me because he knows I would prove he raped that woman.

BTW, Schippers, whom you characterize as an "attack-dog republican", is a lifelong DEMOCRAT.
