Can't argue on valuation -- plenty of room for a nice decent correction, but can you afford to handle a $350 a share stock?

<<just one of many in a standards based non-gorilla game>>

Ouch, do you know the useful life of amcc's design wins? AMCC is far more of a gorilla than you realize.

And shorting amcc as a hedge on Nortel? I would never use a concentrated pure play hyper growth dominant (if not controlling) optical semiconductor company as a hedge against a high quality, but slower growing systems vendor that still does a fair share of legacy circuit switch business.

(Don't get me wrong, we like Nortel a LOT!)

I would NOT be happy if it happens, but i think AMCC is a good candidate to be on the radar screen for some mighty powerful companies that could acquire amcc and do some real damage to a short seller.

Still, on valuation alone, it may be a good short term trade, but i don't really know anyone that's all that good in calling the market short term.

RE "Their 21,000 s.f. in-house fab uses older 4" wafers and an old process. I presume this is mainly for the "old" products, not OC-192 stuff, but couldn't really tell."

Yes, I think the OC-192 stuff is made by IBM using SiGe process.

Al,

Appreciate you posting that piece, but the comm chippies have been the only ones that have seemingly held up. Look at charts of TXCC, EXAR, VTSS, PMCS and AMCC and you'll see that the carnage has gone around these, for the most part.

That's not to say that you'll get a profit from the short, but I think these will continue to run before earnings.

You know the "buy the split rumor" drives these as well.

Good Luck.

Steve
