Aus,

re: "Is it not becoming clearer that the
glory days of the PC are behind us now?"

You know I don't think so, your "post-PC era" is an urban legend. When I have the time I will respond. It's an interesting and significant debate.

Ausdauer, your link to a post about MSFT reminds me of a wonderful story.

Those who don't own MSFT probably think that MSFT is all about Windows, etc. But those who spend their time following MSFT know that MSFT owns up to 25% interests in an unbeleiveable number of companies.

Many years ago, there was a company know as Southern Pacific Railroad. Later it was called "SPC". Management appeared unresponsive to the threat of trucks and airplanes to its old monopoly. Most outsiders wrote off SPC as dead meat.

What they didn't know was that SPC had land grants for >9,000 (no typo -- more than nine thousand) parcels of land in California ... some of which was "prime" land with ocean views. According to the terms of their grants, after a period of time (75 years?) SPC could stop running railroad cars and build condos, shopping centers, and more on those grant deeds.

It was only a matter of time. But since the deeds went back before anyone was born, the "lower of cost or market" showed up on the balance sheet at only $1.00 per parcel! Beneath one <$10,000 journal entry hid the fact that SPC was one of the largest landholders in all of California ... with uncounted BILLIONS in real estate holdings. And most of those deeds became perpetual in the '70s and '80s ... right before the largest real estate boom California would ever see.

Sometimes, the image a company chooses to present has little to do with its true worth.

"I agree with the following poster.
The PC should be a sealed box that you
never need monkey with or update or replace.
Then you adorn the PC with various portable devices
that can be linked to the base station. You know what
I mean. Digital cameras, handhelds, cellphones and the like..."

Oh sure. So are you going to do your all your postings from your Palm which is bluetoothed to your cellphone, while you are talking to your friends while listening to your MP3 player and typing with your nose because you need your hands to hold all this stuff? Should make your posts considerably shorter, don't ya think? :-)
