Maybe he holds conservative positions in some regard and liberal on other. But such mixed positions are deemed by liberal by conservatives. For them it is black and white. Either you agree with all our positions or you are commie type liberal. They play politics of exclusion.

re: Matthews...is and always has been a democrat, to my knowledge. I think his problems are that he grew up Catholic (and the constitution guarantees the separation of state from catholicism), embraces some "dated" values (which have of late come to be commonly associated with the right), and is willing to be honest in public when disappointed with Clinton. This makes him very suspect with party hacks. The majority of his values used to be commonly held democratic values, but many today disavow any such heritage. He is an example of the party leaving him, not him leaving the party.
