Touchy, touchy. For Itanic to be years ahead of AMD's offering, the k8 would have to slip by at least a year. Want to place any bets on that? Of course, this is assuming the Itanic ever gets out of its current permanent pilot production state.

Sort of a silly thing to argue about, because 64 bit processors have been around a long time. Dirk Meyer had a hand in designing one that worked pretty well before he went on to the K7. Intel had plenty of people working on the Merced back then too, and look where it's got them.

Just keep throwing stones out of the glass house, though, Eric. Probably gets a little stuffy in there, with all the Paul Excel types around. Better ventilation might help.

Eric,

Last time we talked 64 bit OSs, you were completely wrong about just about everything you said.

Here is what you said on March 2:
Microsoft's OS already runs on Itanium, they will ship together - don't even give that a second thought. The development began before first silicon and was booting in a week - remember?

I guess we were right, you were wrong again.

Nowhere near ready? Summer is not soon enough, heck the chip won't even be out until Q3

Ooops, wrong again.

Really, hadn't heard that one. 800Mhz is very respectable for servers.
Ooops, no 800 MHz in Q3 or Q4. Maybe Q1 2001.

I haven't seen a single schedule slip in Merced this year, have you?
Good one.

Do you have any more predictions now so that I can have a good laugh 6 months from now?

Joe

Eric,

Guess so, but even with the slip(s) it will be years ahead of anything from AMD.

Think again: Itanium set for March launch

Maybe I should add it to the analysis of your other predictions posted here: Message 14592303

PS: We are approaching the end of 2000 and still no OS from Microsoft for Itanium. The only thing they have is:

an early version of M$' 64-bit Whistler OS, build 2257, running mySQL and interacting with SAP under Linux.

I guess no SQL Server.
