FW, it's more a sad reflection on the pathetic management teams that have historically run the RBOCs (of which Verizon is still essentially one).

One mistake many are prone to is assuming that the US wireless operators will move towards 2.5 and 3G system rollouts and upgrades on a schedule that makes sense to their shareholders. History has shown us that they are usually dragged tooth and nail before they embrace any innovative upgrade of their systems (I'm still waiting for DSL 5 years later). To assume that the US Operators will move as rapidly as the Japanese or the South Koreans would be wrong. To me, the discussions between Nok and Verizon are simply a symptom of Verizon's inability to make a commitment to move off their current CDMA generation platform any time in the near future.

Believe me, I wish these RBOCs were different!

Verizon troubles me for several reasons. As a G* long, I have watched them fumble the marketing of Globalstar to the extent some (I don't share this extreme view) have concluded they are conspiring to bankrupt G*. It probably is instructive to remember VOD is not a pure CDMA play. They have not bet the ranch on Q* so have no need to be first to market with any particular product.

While I suspect a lot of Verizon's problems are related to digesting the recent merger, I wouldn't place much stock in Verizon carrying the CDMA flag with much gusto. Korea, yes. Sprint, yes. VOD can and will go in whichever direction the most dollars lie, and if that is GSM / wCDMA then that's where they'll go. As to what they'll do here in US, they'll be last to market with 2.5 and 3G solutions unless pushed by the likes of Sprint. All JMHO, but I've learned to take a skeptical stance with any entity that has mixed motives. When's the last time we were able to stand up and cheer for the great job Ericsson has done in pushing a CDMA solution, for example.

>>Ed Snyder amuses me.
>>
>>I am yet to hear anything positive coming out of this guy about QCOM

The only positive comments he has made to my knowledge came after the SpinCo announcement. He stated that he felt spinning out the ASIC division would benefit QCOM long term. Other than that, Ed S. is a certified QCOM bear.

Why would Verizon buy 2G 1000000 NOKIA units now?

Can you post source for this information?
