Joe, I don't know why I picked on you for this post. Just had to say that this thread, especially today, flip-flopping from abortion to DDR SDRAM or the like and back, on every other post, is one real trip. Doesn't SI have a policy on off topic? None of my business, just making a comment.

Cheers,

Tony

I find the whole NRA bashing to be empty propaganda. What makes NRA relevant are the members, not money. Also, the 2nd amendment. (funny how the constitution becomes almost an afterthought)

Notice how the bashers bash NRA, not it's members.

Joe,

Let me be the first.....C. Heston is an idiot.

My point was that the US has more assaults, robberies, rapes - well, all violent crimes across the board, not just gun related crimes. Which means that
the US has a higher percentage of population that is prone to violence than the other "civilized" countries.

This is after the fact that the US has the highest incarceration rate, up to 10 times higher than many European countries, meaning that the crime rate
would be higher if the US was able to jail only as few people as the European countries do.

If crime rates are higher in the US, it only stands to reason that the incarceration rate is also higher. As to proportions, your quote being 10x vs Europe, I don't know if this is correct, but if so, it counters the NRA's assertion that the US is not tough on crime. I am being facetious of course.

Also, the 2nd amendment. (funny how
the constitution becomes almost an afterthought)

The Constitution doesn't say that the right to own a gun is unconditional.

Jozef Halada - Re"Also, the 2nd amendment. (funny how the constitution becomes almost an afterthought)"

Only nutters like Jozef and of course Charlton Heston think there is a 2nd amendment right for an individual to bear arms.

And the nutters are wrong.

abanet.org

"The United States Supreme Court and lower federal courts have consistently interpreted this Amendment only as a prohibition against Federal interference with State militia and not as a guarantee of an individual's right to keep or carry firearms. The argument that the Second Amendment prohibits all State or Federal regulation of citizen's ownership of firearms has no validity whatsoever.

The controversy over the meaning of the Second Amendment exists only in the public debate over gun control. Few issues have been more distorted and cluttered by misinformation than this one. There is no confusion in the law itself."

Jo,

re: "incarceration rate"

Well most people that are incarcerated are due to drug related offences.

Perhaps there's more to the problem than purely looking at statistics.

PS - as far as abortion. It is clearly a grey area. Which means to me that it should be a personal choice. And not legislated by the government.

Most people tend to agree with this. Except for the religious nuts.

Kash

It's a popular assumption that the higher crime rates in the US are a result from the rather difficult relationship the American society has with sexuality. Violence as an exhaust for tormented sexual energy. In that light, the eruption of internet sex is seen as one of the reasons, crime rates are going down.

Don't know if this is relevant, I'm not a specialist in these things.

OT, Jozef re <<I find the whole NRA bashing to be empty propaganda.>>

Yep, propaganda is all it is. Few kids get shot in a tragic shooting and the politicians see a chance to pick up few votes. Very shameful. The sad part is, some people fall for it.

You are also correct about the NRA's power. The only reason that NRA has so much power is because it has many members who vote and are very passionate about their right to bear arm.

It makes me so mad that hypocrites like Rosie "the bit*h" O'donnel hold public rallies to ban all fire arms and yet she wants her personal body guard to carry a concealed weapon. How about Diane Fienstien, one of the biggest anti gun politicians in Washington who used to have a very hard to get license to "carry a concealed weapon" in California and admitted to carry a 0.357 in her purse. They should have a right to protect themselves, but general public can not be trusted to do the same. Typical Democrat!
