The thing that deters me from buying NT and adding it to my CSCO is the fact that a large part of their business is based on legacy, or soon to be legacy, products. They are strong in the optical area, but are hardly a pure play.

<< What I believe NT's vision is.. >>

Very well stated, and I would like to add that I am enjoying this discussion.

Interesting comment below from an unidentified consultant on NT's vision v. Cisco's:

"Cisco's power is that it articulates a vision, says one consultant who works closely with Cisco but requested anonymity. "The vision may be all over the map, but at least they have one. That's more than you can say for Lucent and Nortel, and that's why Wall Street loves Cisco," the consultant says."

The above quotation is from an article called "Cisco's Challengers -- the Networking Giant Stands Tall on Wall Street, But Competitors New And Old Are Ready to Rumble":

totaltele.com

The article discusses Cisco's challenges at it relates to its entry into the next generation Carrier network market.

I candidly have not yet formulated a complete picture of how Cisco intends to play in next generation carrier networks but my gut feel is that they will be a player, and a strong one.

Three (of many) recent plays in this arena worth noting are the DoCoMo DoCoMo IP trial (with Motorola & Xybridge) currently in progress, the Telecom Italia cooperatative effort to develop third-generation UMTS mobile wireless systems based on IP, and the initiative with KPMG to launch a European IP hothouse last June as part of its move into the business of providing IP-based networks to the service provider community.

Edit: "Nortel (NT -3 3/16) trading down on rumors that it might miss quarter or guide down future numbers, though this sounds like an unwarranted reaction to the recent bad news from Lucent (LU) and LU's restraining impact on Corning's (GLW) top-line."
