the Bible has been used to justify everything from slavery to Star Wars. Cutting, pasting, and patching verses together, the faithful have made to Bible sanction war, apartheid, celibacy, aid to the contras, genocide, not eating meat on Friday, castration, pacifism, Marxism, cuts in food stamps, the MX missile, sexual promiscuity, burning people alive - and yes, even anti-Semitism.

Indeed, the problem is not with the New Testament or even the Old - but with those who, though reading them, have never leaned the lesson of brotherly love taught within their pages.

>>I disagree with your assessment of the character of Jesus. Where He tries to teach, and follows wisdom from His predecessors--it usually comes
off good. Where He is simply caught expressing His own feelings...He often comes off rather poorly. Some of His behaviour is childish and immature;
Some is vicious and racist. Of course, none of us could afford to have our lives scrutinized under a glass, could we??<<

Would it be too much trouble for you to give examples? You don't have to give citations to the Gospels, just the events you have in mind.

Throwing the moneychangers out of the Temple?

The Gadarene swine?

From the source you found, which is very interesting:

>>The claim that the new Testament is anti-Jewish because it points out Israel's spiritual
ills is as absurd as claiming that the Old Testament is anti-Jewish because it does the
same thing.<<

On another topic, I wonder why Roosevelt did not condemn the Holocaust during World War II? Why didn't he let Jews come here before the war started and afterwards? Should we condemn the Democratic party because he did not? Should we condemn the American people?

Re: I think it is necessary to fold this Nazi chapter into the context of history. Jews had been the victims of extermination designs since shortly after the Christian Church was able to rise to the seat of power. The Nazi contribution to this aim was large and efficient...but it was not at all unique.

I'm afraid you've fallen into the usual misapprehension about the historical roots of anti-Semitism. In the Middle Ages the Catholic Church was not --and could not-- be anti-Semitic.... The Catholic Church was actually anti-Judaic, that is, it didn't attempt to exterminate the Jews, it wanted to convert them instead. The modern notion of race was not elaborated until the late XVIIIth century (Carl von Linné, Mendel,...). Remember the novel Jud Suss by Jewish German author Lion Feuchtwanger --it's about a "court Jew", Joseph Suss Oppenheimer who was the banker of a German prince in the early 1700s and whose successful brother converted to Catholicism. The radical change with Nazism is that it raised a religious antagonism to a genetic incompatibility: at least, the Catholic Church offered Jews a way out of their persecution --abjure your faith and everything'll be all right-- whereas Nazism's anti-Semitism rested on a pseudo-scientific eugenism --you can't convert to another DNA!

This trend to enclose human nature within the framework of pure sciences (such as mathematics and physics) is still at work today, especially in the US.... Your craze about IQ-tests, psychology, cybernetics, and genetics somehow exposes your tacit agenda whereby each and every human behavior/pattern comes out of an inborn defect/quality....
