The main problem with Betamax, if I remember this correctly, is that the content wasn't there.
More and more titles were coming out on VHS, and very few for Betamax.

When comparing wireless technologies (or communication protocols in general), it's not really
the content that's important. It's the speed and reliability.

I really don't think that a comparison to Betamax vs. VHS is valid.

Rajala- It is not at all like betamax/vhs. If fact the betamax/vhs comparison favors Q. If you wanted to watch betamax movies, you had to buy a sony player. If you want cdma 2000, any licensed supplier can provide it.

Your argument is about market share, not licensing issues. The strategy Q uses is similar to microsoft. They did not make the same the mistakes sony did with betamax or the mistakes Apple made with software. Q licenses EVERYONE who wants the superior technology.

The Betamax comparison may work but NTSC/PAL is a better one.
We here in the U.S. got started first with color-TV and decided on NTSC -some of the Europeans picked a better one but later, PAL. But we didn't change to PAL just because it was better.
30+ years later we still have NTSC (Never The Same Color). GSM may not be the best but it will stay around....
