If they can't match the high end, they will be unable to do that. If they're fastest chip is a 1.3 and intel has a 1.7, then as intel shifts production, they will also have fastest mid and low end solutions. It might take a year for this to happen, but I think people largely overestimate the amount of time it will take for intel to shift primarily to p4.

P4 will be the primary chip sometime in 2002. Intel
expects that P4 revenues will surpass P3 revenues in 2002.
Thus, if the ASP for P4 is 2x that of P3, when is the
P4 unit volume going to surpass P3?

Of course, AMD will have something faster and better by
that time. Just do a 0.13 shrink and we're talking 2 Ghz
or so.

Who here think's that AMD doesn't even deserve 1/20th of Intel's market cap? Paul? :) At 1/20th, that's 15 billion, or $50 a share.

Doug,

If they can't match the high end, they will be unable to do that. If they're fastest chip is a 1.3 and intel has a 1.7

AMD said that they will have 1.5 GHz in Q1, some roadmaps point to 1.7 GHz P4 in Q1. AMD didn't say anything about the timeframe beyond Q1. There were hints about Hammer starting at 2 GHz. We may hear something from the analyst conference in November.

But it will be a while until Intel moves to Willy core. As long as Intel has a majority of their chips on Piii core, there is not much to worry about. The only concern would be if Intel is way ahead of schedule on their .13u process and AMD is behind.
