There are many causes of dropped internet connections and tracking the problem down can be troublesome. Not all of the reasons are solely due to the computer or modem. The ISP and the quality of phone lines can play a significant role.

support.microsoft.com

To Start your Computer Without Starting Windows
Click Options, and then click Print to print this topic for reference. Windows Help is not available while you start your computer or run your programs on the MS-DOS operating system.
Click Start, and then click Shut down.

Click Restart, click OK, and then press and hold the CTRL key until the Microsoft Windows 98 Startup Menu appears.
For some machines, you can use F8 instead of CTRL to bring up the Microsoft Windows 98 Startup Menu.

If you want to load your Autoexec.bat and Config.sys files and specify items to omit during the startup process, enter the number for Step-by-step confirmation, and then press ENTER.
If you want to load your Autoexec.bat and Config.sys files and go to the command prompt, enter the number for Command prompt only, and then press ENTER. If your network card has real-mode drivers, you will have network support.

If you want to skip your Autoexec.bat and Config.sys files and go to the command prompt, enter the number for Safe mode command prompt only, and then press ENTER.

Note
After you start your computer in MS-DOS, you need to restart your computer to start Windows again.

Susie, I used to have big time trouble with frequent modem drops, mainly right after connecting. Spent months trying to find a remedy. Nothing helped. This happened with TWO ISPs. Then I switched to MSN and the drops stopped. I'm NOT saying MSN is superior. But it does not [well, almost never :)] drop connections. That probably depends partly on the local ISP hardware. So it may be different at other MSN locations.

There is a modem test right in Win98. Go to MyComputer>control panel>double click modems and click the diagnostics tab.

If the modem test [make sure the modem is NOT in use before you do that] is OK, I'd try another ISP. Alta Vista and Juno, both free, work well for me.

Tech support ALWAYS blames your modem, but I found it is usually something else.

I can second Gottfried's msn recommendation. I use msn at work and rarely get bumped.

Can anyone help me? I have had a Dell Dimension L550r since last March and I have had trouble holding on to my internet connection ever since.

Susie
