They don't come from people with a history of being persecuted here. It does make a difference. It doesn't seem healthy to me to just sweep it all under the carpet- or you get people saying things like "they didn't want success badly enough". History matters. We are lucky old wounds don't matter as much here as they do in the Balkans. But we have done quite inhumane things in this country using race- and not so long ago, either. Your Chinese friends never experienced that being only 2nd generation- and that's great for them. Their experience is not relevant to everyone, however.

Ask the Chinese in parts of China how they feel about the Japanese. That was quite some time ago- but those wounds have not healed either. Different people, different places, different wounds.
