I think real estate will get creamed in the next 1-3 years. I think Qcom is a better investement. The real estate market is at its peak for the cycle, whille the stock market is 20-50% off its high.

ggamer, your question "Would you say it is a good strategy to sell QCOM stock today and use it to buy a real estate property? [in the SF Bay Area]. With this and twenty cents you can make a phone call, but . . .
The Q is down from 200 to 85. SF Bay Area real estate is at the equivalent of '200', IMO. I think you'd be better off selling [San Francisco] real estate and buying the Q. The housing market here is beyond nuts, and I feel must correct downwards. I'm in the commercial real estate biz not residential, so this is just my subjective impression: if you want to buy in the City or Silicon Valley you will be robbed, raped, and pillaged; if you want to buy anywhere else, you'll simply get screwed. Sorry I can't be more optimistic. Mike Doyle

Just to add my two cents to prior responses - no, no, no. QCOM will be a much better investment over the next few years. I agree that prices appear to have peaked. Two homes in my area, which up to know would have already had "sold" signs hanging from them, still appear available.

ggamer: i think real estate is a great investment but it depends on the kind of real estate and where you buy. it also depends on diversification, location of property etc.
personally, i think it is a great time to buy some income property in east palo alto. people need reasonable housing in the south bay and east palo alto is it. buy a few houses there using leverage and watch them appreciate 20-30% annually.

on the other hand, the so-called million dollar estates are sort of flat. sure, homes are not selling like they did 1-2 years ago but they have appreciated (?) and sell for $1-5 million for a simple 3 or 4 bedroom in Los Altos, Palo Alto, Menlo Park etc. I dont think these houses will drop more than 10-15% but they arent going up either.

Will your Q stock ever get hit by an earthquake?
