How in the hell does a machine count favor Bush over Gore? Like Bush didn't get ANY hanging chads. What about all the hanging chad that Bush invariably got across the State? You going to count those too or are you only interested in counting the hanging chads in Democratic counties to give Gore an edge?

If it were mainly a question of chads that had not come fully off the paper, there would be little to dispute. It is not, though. In many instances, chads are being counted that have not been separated from the ballot at all. You are aware, by now, that chads are perforated? There should be no problem in getting them to break free from the ballot. Assistance is also available at the voting booth, and, as you say, if one is an invalid, one can be specially accommodated with a mail- in ballot.

The point, again, is that there is no reason to upend everything in the search for unrealizable perfection, when "the will of the people" is vague and an election the next day might easily have given a different result. There are occasions when a hand count might make sense. Not in this case........
