Very interesting, Rob. I have no legal training and am finding myself glued to the proceedings but confused about the implications of the legal arguments being made. I, too, have been struck this morning by the strength of the Gore team's legal claims. Do you know what the appeal and contestation timelines are, if he should prevail? Poet, gettin' confused

From what i have read and heard of the various court actions that have been commenced, Gore actually has a fairly arguable legal objection to the results of the Florida election, however, the appeal and contestation time lines are so short, to make it nearly impossible for any remedy to have any practical effect...If there was more time AND there are actually some more votes to be found for GORE, i have no doubt he would prevail...It's going down to the wire...not good for the markets obviously...We should (mark that well) have that relief rally everybody keeps talking about(for more than a day, LOL) Considering... * I am not a lawyer. * See the bolded part (by me), i.e. no time left. * From a practical perspective, (attempting to place myself in the shoes of a strategist), --political affiliations aside, since I do not agree in many important points of either side-- * Given that Slate Gordon has lost to a democrat for the last senate seat, making it a perfect 50 % split (imperfect since the VP would be the tie-breaker for either side). However given the so close split the likelihood of either side attempting to pass laws that are heavily weighted to either side would be near zero (certainly not veto proof). * The damage that the USA is sustaining in the eyes of the world in terms of its world leadership, indeed perhaps potentially dangerous if one of the extreme groups decides this is the time to strike at whatever target they may deem pursuable... Then... Would it not at this time, for the "good of the country", (using the exact words of public officials in their self described objectives), be better for the Democrats to call it a day in their fight and start getting ready for 2004 (or even 2002), in an attempt to TRULY unify the country? Also consider that my opinion of Democracy is one that it is overrated... since... At what point would you consider the gravy (i.e. the legal battles and arguing), become outrageously more expensive, than the actual meatballs (i.e. democracy, presidency and all the rest of bs --sorry) or, is lawyer ego that blinding ? ____ Democracy: The art of running the circus from the monkey cage ~ We live in a land of abounding quackeries, and if we do not learn how to laugh we succumb to the melancholy disease which afflicts the race of viewers-with-alarm... In no other country known to me is life as safe and agreeable, taking one day with another, as it is in These States. Even in a great Depression few if any starve, and even in a great war the number who suffer by it is vastly surpassed by the number who fatten on it and enjoy it. Thus my view of my country is predominantly tolerant and amiable. I do not believe in democracy, but I am perfectly willing to admit that it provides the only really amusing form of government ever endured by mankind. H. L.
