I doubt that the Florida Legislature will step in unless things go terribly awry.

I agree.

But I think, given the nature of the deadline, that if handcounting begins that they should immediately start a session. The same goes if votes are disqualified in Seminole or Martin counties. This way they could be prepared to award the electors at the last minute.

But if some court ruling results in a win for Gore, such that Gore's electors are certified by midnight Dec. 11, then the legislature would be overreaching to intervene, would it not? Seems like the moral high ground is to intervene only if there is a danger of having no electors seated by the deadline, and then only if their act seats the most recently-certified electors (whoever they are) at the time of enactment. In other words, it would be a dangerous precedent to flatly seat a slate of Bush electors simply because they don't like the results of a court ruling, eh?

But the image of the Clinton/Gore Nazi's dropping a regiment of trial lawyers on Florida at sundown of election day, and of that regiment going into action at first light on E+1, is going to survive all other images from this episode. It will, in the long run, scar the career of Al Gore, and very possibly his party also...
