Actually T did both:

The telephone giant said that fourth-quarter revenue growth would be 2.5 per cent to 3 per cent, off from previous guidance of 4 percent to 5 per cent.

AT&T said it expected operational earnings per share for the fourth quarter to be in the range of 26 cents to 28 cents, down from the 29 cents to 33 cents previously projected.

A First Call survey of 18 analysts had a mean earnings estimate of 31 cents a share. The U.S. phone and cable
operator said it expected its operational cash earnings per share to be in the range of 45 cents to 47 cents,
against a previous forecast of 49 cents to 52 cents.

The company said it was cutting its fourth quarter dividend by 83 per cent to 3.75 cents a share from its previous dividend of 22 cents a share.

The reason I say correction is that the economy is not in recession....at least not yet. That could change in the next few months!
