It was all about economic and political power, and had little to do with the morality of slavery.

If anyone wants to talk about what is legal and moral, the question I would ask about the Civil War is this:

On what legal or moral authority was the North obliged to prevent the cessession of states from the Union?

JMHO,

LoF

PS I am not arguing that slavery was moral in any way whatsoever. Yet, it's easy to look at something that had been going on since the beginning of civilization up until 140 years ago in this country, and say that it was wrong in hindsight.

When Confederate leaders almost unanimously declare slavery morally right, this, on the basis of the alleged inferiority of the black race, then good reason exists not to force people (certainly not blacks) to honour Confederate symbols with public tax dollars.

The issue was not merely economic. It was both economic and moral, and the two cannot be separated. Alexander Stephens, Jefferson Davis and very many other southerners literally claimed Thomas Jefferson was wrong and that the Confederate government was founded on the natural law that whites should enslave blacks.

That, my friend, is not just economic-- not even close. Indeed it was an affront to America, rejecting the very justification for America's existence. No American can honour this.
