Who is financing all the free information on the internet ? There are a zillion places to get stock charts, news, etc ? I know this runs on the advertising model. Is it still viable or will we see these sites close down and the scheme will gradually shift to a much smaller subscription-based model ?

It's amazing how much electricty these servers and telecom switches use. Most switches each need a dedicated circuit, and a moderately sized switching center or web-hosting facility can use more electricity than three office skyscrapers in manhattan.
