MB, I keep studying Kindleberger's "Manias, Panics, and Crashes," and he makes points every so often that seem esepcially trenchant. One is that banks that provide the credit for a boom/bust do not do well.

I think California is going straight to hell financially. They have got everything wrong. I already hold LEAP puts on Wells Fargo and on Providian (which I just put back in--I failed to get all I wanted on Friday).

Can you or anyone else tell me of any institutions even more exposed than these may be to the credit bubble in California? I think there are going to be a lot of bankruptcies and mortgage defaults. Who will be hurt the worst?

Michael, I have a few questions to start off the year.

How does a small timer like myself best make bets on currencies? For example, if I feel the Euro should strengthen vs. the dollar is overweighting in European equities a good way to position?

Also, I'm looking at bottom fishing some communications companies like Worldcom WCOM and Lucent LU. Do you have opinions on these? Would you prefer option positions to those of equities.

Thanks for your thoughts and Happy New Year. Shane

To All, SI is making a poor start of the new millineum. It has been real balky at posting messages for me. So far, by hitting the submit several times, I have been able to get notes on thread, but it is a pain. I hope everyone else has better luck and that there are no hangovers to be felt. <g>
