John: <a firecrew came down the mountain at the end of their shift and they then organised an ambulance by radio.>

I guess they didn't know about the Palomar Mountain Emergency Medical Services..

fire-ems.net

<Also, people reporting emergencies on CB usually did not know where they were and when they had responded in past they often failed to find the accident.>

THEY ACTUALLY SAID THAT?

Wow! Imagine this conversation..

Hey Bill.. Some more people on Channel 9 are stating that they have been involved in a head on collision.. They say their car is on fire, and their 2 old year baby is trapped inside the car!! They are pleading for HELP!!

Bill responds... Turn that darn CB thing off Frank.. They probably don't know where they are anyway!!! Besides, it's dinner time, and and the Game is getting ready to start!!! Take the Landline off the hook while your up!! You seen the Remote Control???

Frank responds.. Right O'... Bill o' Buddy.. <click> I think the remote is under the Barcolounger.. I'm goin' to the kitchen to pull the plug on the phone.. You wana' Beer or somethin?

John, not much has changed. I've been riding my street bike up and down Palomar's East and South grade for the last 20 years. Most popular day is Sunday, earlier the better. As you may reclall, there is a mountaintop restaurant and post office just 3 or 4 miles from the observatory. A pay phone from that location is used regularly to get help. Minimal cell coverage and cb on that part of the mountain is worthless.

Thanks for stopping for the biker. Could'a been me at one time or another. The mountain rescue people are first rate. They've been sweeping up bike parts and transporting broken bikers to various medical facilities in the area for as long as I can remember going up there. Never an "I told you so" - just competent, efficient emergency help when it's most needed.

It's not so hard to understand that people have only a very general idea of where they're at when they go rural. Unless there is a mile marker sign right at their location, about as close as they can get is "between town a and town b on road x. If really just out for a pleasant drive, most can't even tell you what towns they are between.

A cell phone (if it can get a signal) or a sat phone with built in gps is the ultimate answer. I think that's now government mandated for cell phones, or will be soon. Don't think they're mandating anything regarding cb radios or ham rigs, though. <g>
