GV,

The other thing that the MSFT's and CSCO's and Coke's did was communicate with the analyst's during the quarter, constantly massaging the numbers up or down to reflect the reality of the marketplace. With reg FD this is no longer possible. I expect we will see a lot more over/under estimates reports in the future, even from the guys that were great at managing expectations.

GVTucker,<<<MSFT, CSCO, and AOL have had highly predictable earnings streams over the past few years. Earnings have grown, steadily. Consequently, it wasn't that difficult to manage the earnings stream.>>>

Growth (or no growth) rate has nothing to do with it. All these companies have the same macro economic uncertainties to deal with. CSCO has had the additional complexities of absorbing huge acquisitions and integrating different business cultures and product assimilations. And, all we are talking about is predicting earnings 3 months out relating to one product and about fifty customers (accounting for approximately 80% of revenues and 90 % of profits).

What you are telling me is that management is making something that is relatively simple into something very complex.
