Do you by any chance have any evidence (something Ashcroft might have said or written in the past perhaps) other than some tv-talking-head babble to base that opinion on?

Just look at Missouri where Ashcroft has held the following elected offices:

Attorney General
Governor
US Senator

Is Missouri known for being in the McCarthy era?
