Japan's age distribution is quite different from that of the U.S. Not only is their baby boom about 10 years older than the U.S., but their "echo boom" is also about 10 years older. But in addition, the birth rate in Japan has fallen to a post-war low, and it keeps dropping. Unless Japan loosens its immigration policy, how could it regain its economic prominence, even in 2008?

The age distribution of European states follows that of the U.S. more closely, but, as in the case of Japan, the birth rate there has declined markedly over the past decade.

The U.S. birth rate, while lower than that of the early 90s, is close to its post-war average.

Heinz:

Here are a few ideas for the next few days. Keep in mind that I am usually too "early". (g)

Over the next few days, we are going to receive a boatload of numbers. Tonight, of interest to me are AMCC (E-$0.14), Hand (E-$0.15), INTC (E-$0.37), JNPR (E-$0.18), NVLS (E-$0.70), ROK (E-$0.68).

Tomorrow, we get AMD (E-$0.55), APH (E-$0.74), BA (E-$0.91), CMB, CTXS (E-$0.15), EK (E-$0.68), EIX (E-$0.36), FRE (E-$0.88), GE, IBM ($1.46), JPM (E-$2.34), HDD (E-$0.11), SCNT (E-$0.16), XLNX (E-$0.32).

In general terms, I expect the techs to (a) miss expectations and (b) provide lousy guidance. That being the case, I will maintain or acquire short/put exposure going into those numbers. My interest in the financials is strictly to see whether the strains and stresses are starting to show through yet (I expect not).

If the numbers and guidance are as I expect, then it will be interesting to see if the markets respond to them or merely shrug. My guess is that we get some downside activity, but who knows for sure.

Best, Earlie

someone recently made the argument that the US will not find itself in japan's predicament for the following reason....

infrastructure turnover in the usa occurs at a rate of once approx every 3-4 years

Japan... every 10-12.....

maybe the suggestion is not worth discussing further.
