I never realized until today that Ashcroft was defeated in his last bid for the Senate.

So in all your "research" you didn't find out that he ran against a dead man. That he was hailed by both sides because he didn't call in the lawyers. What exactly did this "research" consist of?

Ashcroft was such an embarasment to his home state that he lost the election even after his opponent died. At that point he was running unopposed for re-election and still lost.
Perhaps that is why he was offered the job as Attorney General.
This was quid-pro-quo for Pat Robertson. It was part of the deal to ensure that Pat Buchannan got no support from the far right.
