John,

We are at the point where we can no longer afford to waste energy wantonly. I have no doubt that Silicon Valley could function far more efficiently (and comfortably) at 50% of it's current energy usage.

I used to wake up in a freezing cold house with the heater running full blast, and then get stuck in bumper to bumper traffic for 45 minutes going to work, and wasting at least a gallon of gas because the traffic wasn't moving.

Then I moved to Colorado and started doing much of my work remotely. I live in a well insulated house, and drive very little. I also get a lot more work done.

John,

Why?, folks won't drop eight bucks for a light bulb.

Its not quite as simple as that. I use compact fluorescent lamps and find that they have a few problems. If they are cold, then it can take many minutes for them to reach full brightness. The colour is not suitable for all circumstances. They are difficult to dim without flicker. They are larger than normal light bulbs and will not always fit in the lamp housing.

Because the quality of fluorescent light stinks - OK for a workshop, outdoor lighting etc, but you can't live under it.
