"One of the things that Clinton did very well was to identify and fix problems before they got to be big problems"

I disagree. Problems don't get much bigger than the rolling blackouts that occurred on his watch.

Not such a big problem, if you grant any credence to Paula Jones (it turns out she pretty much told the truth on everything else).

Hi Cinderella Ed! Regarding your energy problems in the state of CA; It's the electoral votes stupid! Let us know if we need to send blankets.

On another subject, your beloved criminal ex-president Klinton.

>> One of the things that Clinton did very well was to identify and fix problems before they got to be big problems, except for that one big problem lurking behind his zipper of course. <<

I find it amazing how the Klinton supporters want to think the worst thing he did was diddle with the ladies. He can diddle all he wants as far as I'm concerned. Diddle with Hellery or diddle with the ladies that have come forward and exposed such diddling, I'd have to do the diddling to if I were in his shoes.

No Ed, the most criminal act Klinton performed during his presidency was to allow the Chinese the opportunity to procure our most secret nuclear technology.

With China building an SPR, engaging in war games that appear to be in preparation of an invasion of Taiwan, China learning how to build aircraft carriers, (what use would they have for them if they weren't meant to be an offensive weapon?), developing long range missile technology thanks to Klinton and the procurement of our nuclear technology; I wish he did more diddling. I hope we don't end up losing American lives because of that POS Klinton selling out to the Chinese.

Ed, if you'd prefer quilts over blankets let us know. Profits are up and we can afford the extra expense.

The Federal Role

As far as the California specific energy problem is concerned the feds should cap price spikes in energy that rise far above the cost of production. Since we do not have a free market for all the juice (most of it is tied up in long term contracts that have little to do with a free market) controls should be used. If and when there is a free market for energy then there would be no need for controls.

On a national level the feds should tend to issues that benefit the country as a whole. The interstate transportation of energy should be ensured. The feds oversaw the building of the national freeway system...so should they ensure the transportation of energy.

The feds need to ensure an adequate domestic supply of energy such that we are not at the merci of foreign entities that may not have our best interests in mind...and why should they any more than Texas should worry about California's energy shortage? The feds are at least if not more delinquent than California wrt to ensuring their own supply. Californians are embarrassed by Gov Davis's antics. Who wasn't embarrassed by Richardson begging other nations for increased production of oil while the US cut back on oil exploration for its own noble reasons ? Bush sounded a similar tone indicating he would like to see OPEC let the oil flow...he hasn't begged yet....He doesn't have any domestic alternatives in the short term.

The attitude attributed to Californians is also a good fit for many others on a national level. We really should be tending to our energy needs. The energy problem has surfaced in California but the nation needs to tend to its energy situation. Not an excuse for California..but if the nation had tended to its overall energy situation California would not be in its current situation.

We need to do a lot more than open up ANWAR. If this nation wants to thrive we need to seriously increase our energy production. Oil production is steady and we simply don't have the reserves to substantially increase production. So far NG hasn't proven to be an abundant resource and it certainly is not reliable. Have you EVER heard of the coal industry not being able to come up with the goods? The US has enough coal to keep us going for hundreds of years. And with coal we won't have to listen to the business majors and free market enthusiasts complain about us using too much energy. Using less is not a recipe for strong American industry. Our goal should be to use more and at a lower cost. This is certainly possible with coal. All I hear is use less and at a higher cost...that is upside down and backwards.

What's the role of the feds? They have to look at the overall energy usage of the US and take action such that we are not overly reliant on foreign energy supplies. If industry is not building enough coal plants then they have to be enticed to do so.

Also it should be the federal role to ensure energy diversification. A percentage of our power plants should have fuel switching capability. The trend is to make NG plants only. What happens when a large percentage of the power plants are NG only and then the NG producers don't come up with the goods for whatever reason? Blame the consumer?
