re: MSM5105

<< QUALCOMM ... today announced the rollout of the world's first integrated third-generation (3G) cdma2000 1x Removable User Identity Module (R-UIM) handset solution >>

OK. That's good news.

... but I am thick as a brick, sometimes.

Is this "rollout" something that is being annonced and will happen in near future (I think) ... or are these ASIC's rolling out now?

Seems a bit early to go from December sampling to rollout.

Press release on MSM5105 said "first consumer products incorporating the MSM5105 expected to be commercially available in the middle of calendar 2001."

What's your interpretation?

qualcomm.com

Need some technical help.

Does it mean the chip was available earlier and now the software too?

MSM5105, per QC's PR, would be availbe middle of calendar year 2001. What is Korea using for next month's 1x launches?

Is QC trying to deliver a coded message before tomorrow's release?

Ramsey

Look at another angle, Does this mean China Unicom indeed will wait for 1x? Since Huawei claims to have 1x bts, and Datang is upgrading their motorola system to 1x with Nortel, they could get 1x bts built and wait for 1x handset. The service only expected at end of this calender year, about 6 months behind anyway.

I think that the PR was indeed announcing the commercial shipments of the MSM5105. Here is my read:

"QUALCOMM . . . today announced the rollout of the world's first integrated third-generation (3G) cdma2000 1x Removable User Identity Module (R-UIM) handset solution."

It seems that the key word is "rollout." I believe that whatever Q is announcing today differs from what it announced last month about the MSM5105.

"Samples of the . . . MSM5105. . . shipped in December 2000."

Notice the specific mention that samples were shipped last month. It would make no sense to issue a PR which essentially repeats a triumph detailed in a prior PR; this PR of 1/24 references earlier PR's IMHO to emphasize that Q is producing critical products on time (or early) in commercial quantities. (REMEMBER: Q makes ALL the highend market chips and there ain't nothing higher end then 1X.)

"[The MSM5105] offer direct interface with the new 3G CDMA-compliant Schlumberger Simera Airflex(TM) smart cards, announced in June 2000."

This portion of today's PR simply references and emphasizes a CRITICAL feature of the MSM5100.

"The demand for R-UIM smart card capabilities and services has been driven by Korean and Chinese network operators to allow their subscribers to roam across CDMA and Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) networks. These roaming capabilities can lead to new mobile commerce smart card services."

Is Q sending a message by issuing this PR one day before its earnings? We'll soon find out.

IMHO Q has just announced the worlds first 3g-like chip is shipping in commercial quantities. This makes sense in light of Limtex's repeated observations that there is NO 1X news coming out of Korea. Quite simply, there is no news because 1X has very limited handset availability while the system was being tuned. Since chips ship about a quarter before the handsets become available, I'd say that this quarter's earnings will be favorably impacted -- due to increased quantity and ASP of Chips (of which Q has 100% of the market).

Did the market recognize the importance of this announcement? Can someone point me to a company which manufactures a mobile wireless chip this advanced in GSM land?
