Eric- That is too bad because last year at this time IJ was emphasizing that service providers would buy enhanced data rate phones before 1X was available so that when it was available they would get the benefits. It just occurred to me that maybe these MSM3100 phones would also provide some benefits in data capacity even though not as much as the MSM5100 series. I guess he just means that they will promote the MSM5100 chip phones agressively once available.

Eric,

Is the support for IS-95B in the 1X chips (infra), or is it an add-on capacity for Verizon, et al. in the U.S.? I was under the impression that the capacity of the handset will be the limiting factor,
IS-95A handsets will be limited to 14.4
IS-95B handsets will be limited to 64
when the network has upgraded beyond those speeds.

This info is from mobiledataevolution.com, a site bookmarked long ago.
mobiledataevolution.com
then click "CDMA Data Evolution"

If the upgrade to 1X by the carriers will not unleash the potential of the MSM3100, does it have much of a market?

Anybody seen engineer?

When Sprint goes to 1X ... with MSM3100 which is IS95B compatible, and could do 64 kbps, then will such a phone do 64 kbps with 1X or does one need a 5105 MSM to get improvement from 14 kbps?

QCOM management has repeatedly said (including in the last CC) that 1X would be fully backwards compatible to all earlier CDMA systems. I would assume that means the CSM chip will support all modes of CDMA. If so, why wouldn't an MSM3100 work at 64k?

I will pose this question to Q's IR and post their response.
