The cold front didn't swing this far south. Probably not going to get snow, either. The boys spent the weekend with my mother, and yesterday they all got excited by the weather reports and went out and bought a lot of goodies and rented tapes and all. Chris and I were out looking at cars, and when we got home and called them she said they were going to stay there because there wouldn't be any school because of the snow. I was looking at the Weather Bureau site and the satellite photo made it pretty clear that the bad weather was staying north, so we made them come home, and they really had an attitude last night and this morning. Ben has three F's on his interim report card, a big change from the last couple of quarters where he was on the A-B Honor Roll. He says he can bring them up - well, duh, that's why they have interims, but he doesn't understand why we are cracking down on him. Every time I read about how teenagers had jobs and families in the old days, I wonder how they managed. I can't even get mine to pick up their dirty clothes from the floor and put them in the laundry room. One thing that seems to be getting through to him, though, is that his grades do matter. He got a high score on the SAT, and colleges are sending him brochures - I guess the SAT sends the scores out to the colleges - and I showed him the US News and World Report website where they rate colleges - an excellent site, by the way - and he's starting to catch on, that some colleges are ranked higher than others, and are more selective about the students they accept. I feel sort of ambivalent about that whole thing - so much of it is simple snobbery. But such is the world we live in.
