Fyo,

I have long believed that processing should be distributed among special purpose processors. The evolution of graphics processors is a good indication of the success of this approach.

Fyo,

As far as decompression, the mainstream CPUs do just fine decompressing the DVD. The need (and market) for fast compression is small, and it doesn't have to be realtime. But if a niche for fast compression grows, maybe someone will come out with specialized hardware for this that will become so cheap that you have to add it to either the motherboard or the video card.

I don't think I would be willing to spend additional $100 to add general purpose DSP to my computer.
