Lucent and Apple lit a fire under 802.11b with Apple's 11mbps AirPort. Before then 802.11b was running at 2mbps and was very expensive. Apple/Lucent's Airport came in at $100 for the card and $300 for the base station with 56k modem and 10/100T Ethernet so that you can connect to dial-up or to a DSL modem with Ethernet output.

The AirPort caught the PC world by surprise as the PC versions were $200-$300 for the card and near $1000 for the base station - and all you got was 2mbps.

When 802.11a comes out, MSFT has made sure it is working with the standards group so that maybe it can at least be neck and neck with the competition instead of sucking hind ...

It's interesting to note that Intel's home network is pretty much a flop - they too tried to railroad over 802.11b.

Next comes USB2 vs IEEE1394 (Apple's Firewire) - these are important as the last few meters connection and will compete somewhat with Ethernet.

"Hi neek, you may want to consider a new addition ---
Lucent's new spinoff, Agere Systems (AGR)."

Old Mardy- Is AGR in the BBFW space? I thought they were LAN specialists. Did I miss something? Thanks. -MikeM(From Florida)
