I would actually like to examine some data, and deal with hard facts, rather than emotions, which is the norm on this thread. It is true there has been improvement...no question but there continues to be degradtion of the environment within that improvement. SF and LA have improved their air while other cities like Denver, Seattle and Portland have seen their air worsen. Lake Erie and the Cayahoga [sp] River near Cleveland have shown definite improvement in water quality while some conditions are worsening on the Columbia River. And then we have situations like the energy shortage in CA. Right now NW dam operators are having to make the hard decision between how much water can be released for the Chinook salmon which is on the endangered species list and whose numbers were just starting to revive after of years of going down, and how much water needs to be held to keep the power plants working and insure sufficient power this summmer for the western grid. Exacerbating the problem is the worst drought in 25 years in the NW. And then we have find out that in green friendly Seattle approximately 15%-20% [this is from memory] of the city's trees have been lost in the last 20 years. Try repeating that thousands of times all over the world and you can imagine the numbers of trees gone....an important source of oxygen for the world's atmosphere. And then you read things like there were not enough bees three summers ago in WI so they had to import some to pollinate the fruit trees; in the past ten years, frogs have been mutating at a rate way above normal for the species; a unique song bird, peculiar to Hawaii and on the endangered species list, is being taken off the list because not one has been seen one in 5 years and its presumed the species is now extinct, and I could go on and on. And then world wide, we have the losses thru burning of portions of the Amazon rain forests which is considered a primary source of O2 for the planet and is thought to have significant impact on the world's weather and which houses millions of uniques species that are being lost; the glaciers that are in retreat world wide; a hole in the Artic Circle ice, the first time in hundreds of years; island nations under seige by the rising sea; and this list could go on forever. And then you wonder why some of us are concerned? Its not we who are living in a make believe world. Yes, some of the easier environmental issues have been dealt with but some of the more serious ones have not been and they are getting worse. And instead of asking for links or facts, why don't you do the research yourself......of course, if you are not afraid of upsetting your finely honed sense of denial.
