Paul,

re: "However, there is still a lot of disdain by the masses - for anybody with half an ounce of common sense and a functional brain that is actually put to use."

Don't forget to remove your pocket protectors before you send your shirts to the laundry <g>.

I wonder what the cost premium is to use a contract manufacturer? Assuming the transition can be accomplished in X number of months, what does that do to AMD's business model? They are saving capex expense, but what does it do to their new process development time? A contract manufacturer can't be a responsive as a company owned, dedicated fab?

What are the trade off's in this decision?

John

Paul,

there is still a lot of disdain by the masses - for anybody with half an ounce of common sense and a functional brain that is actually put to use.

In France, engineering is considered to be a very glamorous and highly sought after profession. Students fight for spots in engineering schools.

BTW: Looks like yields may not be so good after all. From your favorite rag:

DEALERS TRYING TO BUY the new 1.7GHz Pentium 4 microprocessors have been told they will have to wait at least four weeks for supplies in any quantity.

Intel introduced the chip at a price of $352 only 10 days ago, to a fanfare of price cutting trumpeting all over the newspapers and Web.

There are also shortages of the 1.3GHz, 1.4GHz, 1.5GHz Pentium 4s at the largest distributors too, we understand, with only limited quantities of the products in stock and with some shortages .

Paul, There is a lot of disdain from the reporter segment of society too. I think they are so daunted by technology that they dismiss it as unimportant. Will
