Think about the very large successful companies you know which do not have unions. Many must compete very hard for talent. They provide the best of working conditions and perks. Times have changed and companies know that their workforces are valuable assets to be developed and nurtured. That is the mainstream of thinking in human resources circles. Times have changed.

OT:

"I think unionization or the threat thereof is what encourages companies to treat workers with some decency.
Without any unions at all it would be the individual against company management backed by the corporation."

Gottfried,

Undoubtedly, unions do offer member workers some protection (including those you mentioned). For this, consumers pay dearly and in my opinion is simply not worth it.

My reasons include:

- Unions create at least another layer of bureaucracy, something that is almost always counter-productive.

- Unionized workers tend to abuse the system.

And the one that bothers me the most is that the vast majority of us is "subsidizing" unionized workers (which is a relatively small percentage of the global work force). I see no sufficiently good reasons why consumers should be "taxed" by unions.

It goes without saying that whether one is pro or con union depends on one's situation - for instance, if one is unionized, one stands to benefit from being a member...in this case one tends to glorify unions.
