CNBC just stated that Intel reaffirmed guidance today. Does anyone have a link to this?

Thanks,
Pravin

TCD, If GHz sold, the P4 would be selling like hotcakes.

It isn't. It's had a clock speed advantage for 6 months now, but the word seems to be out that frequency != performance.

The A4 has a slight IPC improvement, reduced power, and SSE. I would't call it spectacular, but 'quite good'. I suspect that certain application / high memory bandwidth combinations might showcase the prefetcher better in the future.

Imagine if AMD had released the P4 with its devastating reduction in IPC and increase in power requirements. What would you be saying about it then?

Doug

p.s. Besides, if you're right, and GHz begins to sell, all AMD need do is run a few transistors of the chip at 1.5 times the frequency, use a 2/3 divider on the rest, and tout its next generation chip. "Sure, the IPC went down, but gosh, look at that frequency rating. And unlike Intel, our chip doesn't need more power!"

doug: the palomino seems like a mild disappointment to me. I was hoping it'd be clock for clock a bit better then the thunderbird, and so far it doesn't really seem to be.

Benchmarks are still very, very scarce, so any conclusions are likely premature... that said, I've been positively surprised by the performance of the Palomino so far. Solid (although small) gains pretty much across the board, along with significant gains in memory bandwidth intensive apps. Support for SSE is a positive, although I fear we might see that the implementation is... not quite optimal.

I still think it's rather odd that the core voltage has been increased a notch, but even then power consumption is down nicely (although not a nicely as it would have been if the the voltage had been... say 1.6V).

Re: "Remember Jerry's comments about 1 Billion in operating profit for 2000, or his comments about a 1.5 ghz in January, or his comments about Mustang and mobiles in Q4 of last year? I can think of lots of comments by Jerry that would have been great news if true. Unfortunately, almost none of them ever come true."

AMD - executing itself flawlessly.
