Art, re: " ... Jeffords had no choice ..." If you read the text of Jeffords' speech, you heard the spirit of a man committed to serving his state and his personal beliefs. If some call his actions "self-serving", they are correct ... because "a man dedicated can not be swayed from his purpose" (approxiquoted from Abraham Lincoln and others). IMHO, Jeffords' actions are a positive example of our Constitution in action. He consulted with everyone from the President to his dog, considered all possible courses of action, and then responded in a way that he considered best for his State and the nation, in that order. If our founding fathers were still alive, I am certain that they would have sent letters of praise to a Senator who risked reelection and perhaps his political career for the State that elected him. It surely beats the hell out of William Harding's presidency... where an "honest man, committed to his beliefs" followed a simple and preset agenda that favored oilmen and then sunk the U.S. into "The Great Depression".
