All much like a good chess game. I guess it supercedes the days of the arena when warriors fought to overcome with physical might. Now we have an intellectual battle, always conducted without even the hint of physical violence. The battle actually on two fronts--the emotional as well as the intellectual. Oh, that sounds important. excuse me, I better write that down--can I borrow a pencil, Ma'am... ?

Of course, Columbo is not much more canny than the best of his opponents. But he has something most of them lack: he is able to play the rube, to sublimate his ego, to keep a fairly neutral emotional stance. Often he has great admiration for his opponents, some whom have good hearts in spite of what they have done.
