Isn't the point of incentive options that employees are paid more precisely the "market rates for their skills." But it's the stock market rate. If their skills aren't being used efficiently, they're _supposed_ to move to someplace where they _will_ be used efficiently, and the mechanism for that reallocation/movement is the stock market.

how do you know csco didn't reprice options, or that newly issued options do not reflect the fact that many existing options are now OTM??? keep in mind that some cos. may just issue more options, leaving existing OTM options open, possibly for accounting reasons.

15-May-01 13:00 ET Cisco Systems (CSCO) 19.48 +0.91: Cisco moving higher; we're hearing from CIBC World Markets that the company priced new employee options last night; this is consistent with what Cisco indicated on its recent conference call and should not come as a surprise. Many nevertheless see this as a positive development as it might indicate that Cisco management sees a bottom ahead. Given that management has badly misjudged its market over the past six months, it's debatable whether much weight should be put on management's expectations.

Yeah, there's so much hiring going on nowadays, I hear Burger King and McDonalds are paying real well nowadays. Where the hell are the disgruntled employees going to find employment? In case you haven't noticed, there's a boatload of dot.com brainchildren who are looking for work. And LU and NT are laying off about 32,000 between the two. Add CSCO's 8000 unemployed and you get a saturated market. Supply and demand don't only apply to stock price. These folks also have to compete with the new hi tech grads from the new crop. Not a good time to be quitting imho.knc

Mindmeld, it doesn't sound like Cisco has slowed down the employee options gravy train to me. Frankly, I am a little sick of it: dilute the shareholders, then artificially pump up the earnings by not expensing stock options. Sometime this has to stop and Cisco has to get back to creating legitimate shareholder value. Cisco even excludes employee options exercise related payroll taxes from pro forma earnings---calling it a one time event.

Tell your friends they can start Cisco back on the road to recovery by taking fewer stock options and working for less. Your friends aren't going anywhere; the time is way past where they could leave for easy opportunities elsewhere. Right now they are lucky to have a job with a tech company that will still be here in five years.

Mindmeld,

Where do these employees go ? only some startup's are hiring. Look at juniper's stock, where does it stand
in regards to last year ? juniper, nortel, lucent, extreme,
foundary, avaya... are all laying off people. Cisco gave a six month package to effected employees whereas juniper only
gave a two month package, if I had a choice i will be in cisco.
