Awesome post GZ!!! These days if you're against affirmative action, unrestrained welfare or any other left wing brain storm you're either just mean spirited or a racist. I believe the opposite is true, the excessive nature of these programs have formed a culture of dependency that promotes complacency and keeps an entire section of America from realizing their full potential. (poor whites included). I've always suspected this is an ideal situation for many liberal Democrats who can continue to buy votes by handing out table scraps and at the same time not have to worry about "those people" showing up at the local country club or Cape Cod compound as the case may be. Thanks GZ...evidently flap didn't read this, or purposely ignores it....Any serious historian will question the idea of reparations....the entire idea of "fault and blame" is so engrained in some people, they lose sight of reality. In a 9th generation from present time, which great-great (etc) relative would one compensate of the 256 individuals who form the individual's background. Gen 1: the individual today Gen 2: individuals parents = 2 Gen 3: grandparents = 4 Gen 4: great-grandparents = 8 Gen 5: g-grandparents = 16 Gen 6: gg-grandparents = 32 Gen 7: ggg-grandparents = 64 Gen 8: gggg-grandparents = 128 Gen 9: ggggg-grandparents = 256 Gen 10: gggggg-grandparents = 512 ETC! 1024, 2048, 4096.... Of these people in one's past, how many individual's were actually slaves???? I honor my ancestors, and also know that each of us has been given life.... a life to live and succeed....or not succeed. There's a difference between a handout and a helping hand. I am opposed to a one-time financial bonus, or reparation, to America's underclass. Unlike you, however, I see no harm in offering financial incentives for those that break away from dependency and embrace knowledge. This scholarship plan that I spoke of is an excellent idea that needs to be explored further. Unfortunately, for too many people in this country, the "pity me victim mentality" is the only one they know. Children born amidst poverty and of single parents who have no use or appreciation for education need a major helping hand. To do nothing will ensure that the cycle of dependency will continue generation after generation after generation.
