Recognizing what part of ones own success is due
to good fortune has never been a strong suit of Americans.

>>>i argue that the #1 determinant of success in life is one's parents. bill gates born to a drug addicted welfare queen in seattle's rainier district would not be the same bill gates as the one born to two lawyers at a precise time in history. fortunate people often confuse skill with good fortune, imho.

i'm not saying some successful folks aren't skilled, they are. i'm saying the reason they are skilled is in large part due to their upbringing - with the parents being an integral part.<<<

Oh, agreed. People born on second base (middle class?) often think they hit a "double." The best thing you can say about them is they didn't screw up what advantages they were born with through crime, drugs etc...

Because America is a largely fluid society (as compared to other parts of the world) we tend to ignore and outright deny on occasion that the issue of class plays any significant role in our politics and culture...just like we try to ignore the issue of race or sexism for that matter.

BTW--I've been gone from the computer, lunch date, meetings etc...Did Luc declare thread amnesty again? <ggg> I hardly recognize the place...<ggg>

Just as frequently as unfortunate people confuse success with good fortune. In fact I would say this is the biggest obstacle people who are born poor have to get over, that somehow the world is rigged so they can't succeed and there doesn't exist a logical set of steps available for them to succeed. It may in fact be stacked against them, but hardship can be a great motivating force. Persistence wins out over brains repeatedly and it surely wins out over being simply born to a middle class family. When you are talking about Bill Gates type success, you can't remove the idea that luck had an enormous hand, but the guy might be one of the most persistent people on the planet. Some of the hardest working individuals I know were born wealthy and some of the most successful I know were born poor. Seeing this was a great eye opener for me. It was then I realized that there was just as much prejudice against wealthy people in this country as there is against poor people.

skeeter, i didn't know u were a friend of B.
Bill or bastards.
Shouldn't parents be encouraged to take care of their kids. we shouldn't have government i.e. taxpayers taking care of kids. parents will do a better job. but, we shouldn't disincentivize them. kids shouldn't get free food, clothes, education, etc. - then many parents won't provide. we shouldn't make heroes of the uninsured. people should have insurance-not expect government to provide health care for free.
