Dave, the most open, tolerant and successful society in the world was started by people with a deep sense of religious connection, America. The evidence that believing in God, equates to being dangerous, rigid and intolerant is dubious at best. Some of the most intolerant people in the world, profess a naturalistic non-diety connection to the planet.

Sure, evil people have used religion as a convenient stepping stone to inflict atrocities on others.

However, I would say those societies which have governmentally banned the expression of religion, have been far more efficient and effective at creating human misery and intolerance then those who have not.

Any system of values may be twisted, whether that be Islamic fundamentalism or the Nazi movement's twisting of Darwinism into a monstrous international Eugenics program. But the belief in a monopoly on truth makes religion quite prone to abuse, you must admit.

There has been no greater abuse than that of the benevolent government imposing its humanitarian goal on its people. That resulted in millions upon millions of deaths and in this century has made any abuse of religion look like child's play. The Communist killing machine has been the curse of this century. Tragically it gets no play in the liberal schools and is still treated with great respect. To say your a Nazi would be to invite a stoning but to say your a communist is to gather ooh's and ahh's and other intellectual praise.
