Article from the Inquirer : AMD being bled dry
theinquirer.org

THE PROCESS RACE with Intel is taking a deadly toll on Austin's Advanced Micro Devices, inside sources have revealed. Although AMD has competed admirably with Intel's frantic fab and process expansion up to this time, the battle is becoming more and more costly to wage.

AMD's $2 billion Dresden fab is widely regarded as one of the most advanced in the world, and it has allowed AMD to one-up Intel in the race to copper interconnects. Intel, however, is poised to substantially beat AMD to.13 copper process technology, as well as future .10 and .07 micron processes.

Already, the intro date for the K8 'Hammer' processor line has been pushed back substantially because of delays in the .13 and .13 SOI processes it requires. Intel, however, will be flaunting its .13 Northwood Pentium 4 in October of this year.

AMD is seeking partners to help it in its manufacturing plight, among them Motorola and IBM. 3rd party foundries, such as TSMC and UMC, are also being contacted. µ

* MEANWHILE this Reuters report quotes an AMD official as saying that the firm's market share will reach 30 per cent by the end of this year.

Main difference I see is that Tualatin can scale higher than Coppermine. No big surprise. Maybe a little more IPC.
Sadly, Desktop Tualatin at high speeds may be retarded by Intels marketing of the P4 with it's higher Mhz.
As for benchmarks...I would like to have seen a Palomino at 1.4 vs a Tualatin at 1.4. Also, I get tired of the same old Quake 3 benchmarks. Perhaps someone should make a universal gaming benchmark.

Re: the Tu was overclocked

The tweak was to run it at 1.8v not, 1.6v.

This is a .13 chip rated to run at 1.4v. What was done is the equivalent of running a P4 or Athlon at 2.3v.

Aluminum Durons from Austin (morgans) are expected to run at similar speeds.

This doesn't bode well for Intel's .13 process and may be why AMD now expects to increase its market share more than previously estimated. If AMD's 5 year old aluminum process is keeping up with Intel's near future .13 copper process for similar pipeline length chips....
