"'ll bet that no cigarette company actually shoved a cigarette in anyone's mouth"

They don't shove them in you mouth they just told you they were not harmful or addictive and gave them away free to kids to get them addicted which is exactly what they knew would happen. They targeted their advertising toward kids and adjusted nicotine amounts to guarantee addiction.

"Cars kill people, but do they rant and rave about car manufacturers?"

Perhaps you don't remember the book, "Unsafe at any Speed", by one named Ralph Nader. Do you remember cars without seat belts, air bags, cushioned dash boards, collapsible steering wheels, shatterproof glass, turn signals, rear tail lights, crash resistant bumpers, gas tank protection, etc etc....

"Kids die in swimming pools, but do they want to shut down pool makers.."

No but they have mandated safety screens over exit holes in pools, fences around pools, electrical codes, etc etc... You unaware of these things?

"t is impossible to protect people from themselves."

That's horse crap!!! That's what all of the above requirements do and do well.....

hagi, you are echoing the typical response from the right on the question of personal responsibility. Everyone should take responsibility for their own actions. Fair enough. Like individuals, "producers" or corporations are people as well. And producers regularly engage in advertising practices, enticements that they are loath to take responsibility for.

It's not against the law to produce cars or pools or cigarettes or to offer credit cards. But the car manufacturers do actually attempt to make the cars safe for standard use. Cigarette manufacturers never did, to my knowledge. In fact they denied cigarettes were harmful for many years and resisted the scientific evidence for years. If a car manufacturer was found to know about a safety defect and didn't do anything to correct it, they should be held accountable. Alcoholic beverage producers regularly include cautions about driving in their ads now. Great. But credit card companies shove offers in front of young people or continue to extend credit to bad risks and then want legislative relief from the bankruptcy situations that they knowingly helped create. Not right. All guns should not be outlawed, but if manufacturers continue to resist calls for safer products, such as a trigger locks, they should be held accountable for producing an unsafe product.

Hello Haqi,

I agree with you 100%. This is a cash cow for the liberals and they know it.
