I don't quite know what you meant by "small game".
Having lived many years in the far north, I can say that the Winchester 30-30 is a favorite hunting rifle among the Indians for caribou and black bear. I guess they like the Win 30-30 simply because it is relatively short (a carbine), light and fairly accurate up to about 100 metres with enough power to bring down a deer, caribou and black bear. Of course those hunters know where to place their shot for an effective kill.

By the way, an Indian woman ("squaw"???) once brought down a polar bear with a Winchester 22 !!!

Were you aware that the 30-30 kills more deer than any other?

In Canada, before the M16 there was the FN, which fired a .308 calibre round- would be a great deer rifle- could hold a lot of punch over long range- but tends to give soldiers swollen faces when they are on the range all day. Due to recoil. It's a cannon compared to the M16. M16 is a lot lighter though.Short range.
