Win, Re : "Since nobody in particular was acknowledging Alpha as much of a force before this, why is this latest Intel "coup" supposed to mean anything anyway?"

The shift is dynamics of compaq going with Intel-only solution for the server high-end market and what is symbolizes is a very big deal IMO. In some ways the battle between AMD and Intel got played out between Dell and CPQ. CPQ deciding to go with Intel-only is a way of acknowledging that the cost (R&D and design of Alpha and validation) is too much to sustain over a long term. This move is a significant shift in Alliances and it may signify that CPQ (always an AMDs ally in the past) may not afford and willing to push AMDs product as hard. Having said that, there is a good chance that there will be other shift in alliances, and some of them may go in AMDs favor (like perhaps SUN/AMD Hammer).

Given that, even Osha, Peck and Scoval think this can only help Intel, I am surprised to see so many of you on this thread having a hard time admitting (or understanding) that this would hurt AMD (what must help Intel must AMD, right ?).

Maui.

I see denial has set in big time. Let me break it to you gently. Compaq is committed to IA64 100%. They aren't going to use hammer. Maybe nobody will. Compaq was far and away AMD's best, if not only hope, to get their foot in the door. That door has been slammed shut. No silicon, no OS and no customers but there's always NiceGuy to cheer you on!

I would like to let this topic run it's course. I had my say and I'll post no more here, unless someone posts to me.

Win,

Re: "Since nobody in particular was acknowledging Alpha as much of a
force before this ..."

Better check with Rob (What's his name) before "bucking" the standard
AMDroid "twiddle". Alpha was the greatest processor ever !!
Compaq really blew it with the purchase of DEC ... Intel got the
Fabs and now gets the design engineers (for almost free). Looks
like AMD will have to stay on the low end for a while longer.
Hey Win, when do you think AMD will "re-purchase" their headquarters. <ggg>

Make It So,
