Dan,

re: "This was bad news for AMD, and could indicate some pretty bad news coming soon from Intel."

And that will make you feel better? You don't get it, do you. Investing is about making money, not defeating competitive companies.

re: "AMD had record unit sales this quarter - the most CPUs they've ever sold in any quarter in their history - but this wasn't anywhere near being a record unit quarter for the industry."

Until the recent(last 18 mos) market share rise for AMD, they have never seen any significant share of units or $'s in the PC market in the past decade, and I'd argue that their 19-22% of units still give them well south of 15% in $'s and it sounds like the $'s may be shrinking. A record quarter of PC chips for them is one more unit than last quarter. Intel may beat their Q1 in units as well, but come in a bit lower on last quarters ASP, and/or a bit higher on cost... AMD is coming in more then 10% lower on ASP, with no relief in sight.

Over the past quarter AMD moved a few speed grades below Intel (Intel moved ahead faster). They appear to be trailing on micoarchitecture for new and emerging applications and they trail in process technology and deployment of capacity. They have some cash (over $1B), but not a lot if they start putting out red ink (A MegaFab is over $2B). Intel has cash, capacity, two new architectures ramping, and probably more ability to reduce operation costs if the slowdown extends. The slowdown will end and people will buy computers for the first time; to replace existing computers; and to supplements existing computers. The 90's proved one thing, technology can increase productivity, and productivity reduces costs, and reduced costs increased profit. Intel will be standing when this is over and very well positioned to supply building blocks to all computing segments.

Today the company said that, despite continuing weak PC market conditions and very aggressive pricing by Intel Corporation, the company achieved record unit sales of AMD Athlon(TM) processors, record unit sales of AMD Duron(TM) processors, and record aggregate PC processor unit sales, demonstrating the breadth, strength and competitiveness of its PC processor product line.

Notice the word unit vs. revenue in the quote 3 times. Wrigley sells a lot of gum at a penny a stick (or used to be a penny), but isn't in the DJIA. I think Intel's ASPs due to their owning the notebook and server markets protected them somewhat in the quarter. Also, Intel "knows" how and when to warn.

This was bad news for AMD, and could indicate some pretty bad news coming soon from Intel.

Dan:

Your my AMD/DDR friend. What do you think of AGP 8X specifications calling for 512 MBit/sec sustained data transfer from memory controller with burst rates of 2.1 GBit/sec. I wonder how fast one has to clock DDR memory to get decent Quake numbers with AGP 8X video boards. Not that I am unduely pro RDRAM but if AGP 8X hits market lets say for end of year selling season, fewer Athalons and XBoxs are going to be sold since they will show no major improvements using AGP 8X than AGP 4X video subsystems.

Dan, <This was bad news for AMD, and could indicate some pretty bad news coming soon from Intel.>

Still think Intel will have lower EPS than AMD?
